Brighton and Hove Conservatives have selected Clarence Mitchell as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Pavilion in the 2015 General Election.
Clarence, who was born and brought up in London, has strong links with East Sussex having completed his journalism training there in the early 80s, before covering Margaret Thatcher as a local reporter on the Hendon and Finchley Times.
For more than three decades since, he has worked in local and national media, government and the private sector.
A former BBC News correspondent and presenter, he has also worked for the Cabinet Office and Conservative Campaign HQ during the 2010 General Election campaign. He took part in the No to AV campaign, supported Boris Johnson during the 2012 London Mayoral election campaign and canvassed during the Eastleigh by-election. He has three children.
Commenting on his selection, Clarence said:
"Being selected for such an inclusive, diverse, tolerant and culturally vibrant seat as Brighton Pavilion is a huge and exciting privilege. I'm determined to reward the faith that has been placed in me by working tirelessly for all the people of the city, campaigning hard to ensure they not only recover from the failure of Green politics but that they also gain an MP with a strong, distinctive voice in Parliament; one whom they can trust to deliver on local issues. Only a Conservative government will continue to tackle the deficit, reform our welfare system, reduce immigration and give the British people a long overdue referendum on the EU."
